Tk 7.04b loans disbursed to rehabilitate poultry sector

A total of Tk 7.04 billion (704.40 crore) as loans were disbursed during the last fiscal year among the poultry farm owners and traders to help them overcome the losses caused by the avian influenza known as bird flue, reports BSS.

Besides, Tk 418 million (41.80 crore) was rescheduled in the sector in June last, said a statement of the Department of Agriculture Credit and Special Programmes of Bangladesh Bank in the city Friday.

Of the total loans, the highest amount of Tk 3.45 billion (345.55 crore) was disbursed by the HSBC, a foreign bank, followed by the private commercial banks with Tk 3.14 billion (314.13 crore) and the specialised banks with Tk 293.8 million (29.38 crore) in 2007-08.

The amount of the loans disbursed last fiscal year by state- owned commercial banks amounted to Tk 86.3 million (8.63 crore) while the non-banking financial institutions disbursed Tk 67.1 million (6.71 crore) during the period.

According to the statement, the specialised banks rescheduled loans amounting to Tk 401.1 million (40.11 crore) followed by the private commercial banks with Tk 15.7 million (1.57 crore), state-owned commercial banks with Tk 0.6 million (6.0 lakh) and non-banking financial institutions with Tk 0.585 million (5.85 lakh).

Of the private commercial banks, Islami Bank disbursed Tk 1.28 billion (128.83 crore), Prime Bank Tk 559.9 million (55.99 crore), Al-Arafah Islami Bank Tk 507.8 million (50.78 crore), BASIC Bank Tk 140.2 million (14.02 crore), Shahjalal Islami Tk 138.2 million (13.82 crore), One Bank Tk 130.5 million (13.05 crore), BRAC Bank Tk 124.2 million (12.42 crore), AB Bank Tk 99.6 million (9.96 crore), National Bank Tk 88.0 million (8.80 crore), Dutch-Bangla Bank 30 million (Tk 3.0 crore), United Commercial Bank Tk 8.0 million (80 lakh), Trust Bank Tk 7.83 million (78.30 lakh), Uttara Bank Tk 6.7 million (67 lakh), Eastern Bank Tk 3.8 million (38 lakh), First Security Bank Tk 3.0 million (30 lakh), Mutual Trust Bank Tk 2.64 million (26.40 lakh), IFIC Bank Tk 129.8 million (12.98 crore) and Jamuna Bank Tk 1.2 million (12 lakh).

Among the state-owned commercial banks, Agrani Bank disbursed Tk 75.5 million (7.55 crore), Sonali Bank Tk 7.95 million (79.59 lakh) and Janata Bank Tk 2.82 million (28.22 lakh). Of the specialised banks, Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) disbursed Tk 279.5 million (27.95 crore) while RAKUB disbursed Tk 14.3 million (1.43 crore) in 2007-08.

Besides, Saudi-Bangladesh Industrial and Agriculture Investment Company disbursed Tk 50 million (5.0 crore), United Leasing Company Tk 6.1 million (61 lakh), Oman- Bangladesh Leasing and Finance Company Tk 5.0 million (50 lakh), Bangladesh Finance and Investment Company Tk 4.0 million (40 lakh), Industrial and Infrastructure Development Finance Company Tk 1.0 million (10 lakh) and Islamic Finance and Investment Company Tk 1.0 million (10 lakh).

Of the total loans rescheduled in June this year, Al-Arafah Islami Bank rescheduled Tk 6.5 million (65 lakh), UCBL Tk 8.2 million (82 lakh), ICB Islamic Bank Tk 1.0 million (10 lakh), Sonali Bank Tk 0.6 million (6.0 lakh), BKB Tk 4.01 million (40.11 lakh), ICB Tk 0.58 million (5.85 lakh) and Uttara Bank Tk 0.58 million (5.85 lakh).

Of the state owned commercial banks, Sonali Bank charged 8.0 per cent interest rate for the loans disbursed, while Agrani Bank charged 9.0 per cent interest and Janata Bank 12 per cent.

Among the specialized banks, BKB charged 11.5 per cent interest rate, while private commercial banks charged 18 per cent interest rates for the loans disbursed among the poultry farm owners.

According to the Breeders Association of Bangladesh, the poultry sector suffered both direct and indirect losses of a total Tk 41.65 billion (4,165 crore) from March 2007 to January 2008 due to the avian influenza.
