Traders eye fall in onion prices in few days

Although the price of onion has been on an upward trend, traders are expecting a huge fall in the price once the newly harvested onions start coming to the city kitchen markets, reports UNB.

During a visit to the kitchen markets at Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Mohakhali and Segun Bagicha in the city, this correspondent found that a kilogram of new onions was being sold at Tk 85 to Tk 90 while the price of imported onions and old onions ranged between Tk 80 and Tk 85 and Tk 100 and Tk 120 a kg respectively.

Wholesalers said farmers in Faridpur and Pabna have already started to harvest onions which will make their way to the city markets within a few days.

Once the new onions hit the city markets, the price will start to fall, they hoped.

On the other hand, the price of winter vegetables has been maintaining a standard trend in the kitchen markets.

Brinjals is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 a kilogram while new potatoes at Tk 20 to Tk 35, beans at Tk 25 to Tk 45, borboti at Tk 35 to Tk 45, green tomatoes at Tk 40 to Tk 50 a kg and cauliflower at Tk 10 to Tk 30 a piece.

Meanwhile, small fishes are being sold at Tk 250 to Tk 350 a Kilogram, mola fish at Tk 220 to Tk 250, kajoli fish at Tk 320 to Tk 400, tengra fish at Tk 250 to Tk 350, ruhi (small size) at Tk 140 to Tk 160, ruhi (big) at Tk 220 to Tk 300, sarputi at Tk 120 to Tk 160, pangash at Tk 90 to Tk 110 and telapia at Tk 100 to Tk 140 a kg.
