Train derails as 20-foot tracks removed in Mymensingh

MYMENSINGH, Dec 29 (UNB): Train movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway route which remained suspended on Monday following the derailment of a train in Gafargaon upazila, resumed using an alternative route via Mymensingh-Bhairab.
Earlier, train services on Dhaka-Mymensingh route have remained suspended since early Monday after two bogies of Agnibina Express derailed in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh district due to the removal of a portion of the railway tracks by miscreants.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
The derailment occurred around 5:10am as the Agnibina Express was travelling from Tarakandi Station towards Gafargaon Railway Station, said Mymensingh Station Master Hanif.
He said miscreants removed around 20 feet of the railway tracks, causing the train to derail.
A rescue train from Dhaka rushed to the spot and recovered the derailed bogies.
Due to the disruption on the main route, the train later departed for Dhaka via an alternative route through Gauripur, Kishoreganj and Bhairab at around 11:15am, said Mymensingh Railway Station Superintendent Abdullah Al Harun.
He also said that the Jamalpur Express and Mohanganj Express trains from Dhaka would reach Mymensingh via Bhairab.
Railway sources said several intercity trains were cancelled due to the suspension of services on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route.
Bangladesh Railway has requested passengers to log in online to claim refunds for cancelled tickets.
Mymensingh Railway Transport Inspector Shahinur Islam said the rescue operation was underway and it may take another two to three hours to complete.
