Transport workers block Janopad intersection

A good number of transport workers blocked Janopad intersection in Sayedabad area of the capital on Monday, protesting against the counter-based bus services.
However, they demanded the contractual bus services on the city routes.
The Dhaka Bus Transport Owners Association (DBTOA) launched the counter-based bus services on Thursday with a plan to run 2,610 buses of 21 companies on various routes in the capital.
Witnesses said transport workers, mainly from Turag and Balaka bus companies, staged a demonstration at the intersection around 10:30am to press home their demand.
At one stage of the demonstration, they put barricade on the intersection, suspending traffic and creating traffic jams.
Some workers stopped operating buses of several companies, causing immense sufferings for passengers.
Hundreds of commuters were found waiting for buses to go to their destinations.
The protesters withdrew the brocade from the busy intersection around 2:00pm.
DBTOA general secretary Saiful Alam told the FE that due to misconception about the counter-based bus services, they are facing obstruction from the workers.
He also said the counter-based bus service has been launched to bring discipline on streets.
Meanwhile, transport workers withdrew their blockade, but stuck to their guns.
They demanded the withdrawal of the e-ticketing counter system.
