FE Report
The government's continuous efforts to ensure payment of outstanding wages and allowances to the workers of closed Tuba Group factories made no major headway as the owner declined to pay the same.
"We are yet to get any positive response from the Tuba Group management. If the owner fails to make payments to the workers before the Eid, we are considering taking legal action against the authorities concerned," Labour secretary Mikail Shipar told the FE Friday evening.
The workers of five Tuba Group factories and labour leaders are demanding their 'lawful' arrears and festival allowances. To press home their demands, they observed a series of agitation programmes including demonstration in front of the BGMEA building Friday morning.
Following their demands, the government held several meetings with the Tuba Group authorities and their insurer to ensure payment of the workers' dues.
When contacted, managing director of Tuba Group Delwar Hossain said he had informed the state minister for labour of his inability to pay the workers.
"I did not get the claimed insurance money and unable to pay the workers," he added.
Convenor of Tuba Group Sramik Sangram Committee Moshrefa Mishu said: "It is very inhuman that the Tuba Group workers are yet to get their rightful payments."
She blamed the government and the BGMEA for their failure to ensure payments to the workers.
