Two cases filed over Banshkhali carnage

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 18: Two separate cases were filed over a tripartite clash between workers of a power station, police and villagers at Gondamara union in Banshkhali Upazila on Saturday night, hours after the carnage that left five killed and 15 injured.

Sources said Saturday's clash first took place between authorities of S Alam Group's Coal-based Power Station and its workers over non-payment of dues to the workers. Police deployed at the power plant got involved in the clash which spread to nearby villages with the villagers joining the mayhem.

Coordinator of S Alam Group's Coal-based Power Station, Faruk Ahmed, filed a case on behalf of his company with Banshkhali Police Station against 40-50 persons, including 22 identified workers of the plant.

Banshkhali police filed the other case against 2,000-2,500 unknown persons for the clash.

When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Banshkhali Police Station Shafiul Kabir confirmed filing of the cases on Saturday night.

"Two cases were filed over S Alam Group's Banshkhali Coal-based Power Station clash that killed five workers and injured a total of 15 persons including three policemen. One case was filed by the police while the other by Faruk Ahamed, Coordinator of the Coal-based Power Station of S Alam Group." he said.

Meanwhile, two separate investigation committees were also formed to investigate the bloody clash and the murders. Chattogram district administration formed a four-member committee while the district police formed a three-member committee in this regard.

The district administration directed its committee to submit findings within the next three working days after formation of the body, said sources.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mominur Rahman said, "We have formed a four-member committee led by Additional District Magistrate Sumoni Akter. We also donated Tk 0.5 million (Tk 5 lakh) to the families of five slain workers and Tk 50,000 to each injured worker for treatment."
