Two cleaners died and one was injured while working in a manhole at Maniknagar in the capital on Friday.
The incident took place at about 3:00 pm on the day when three cleaners were cleaning garbage jammed inside the manhole near Jirani Khal road, north of Maniknagar High School.
The victims were identified as Nuru Mia (60) and Dilu Mohammad (alias Dila, 60). "The two cleaners got trapped inside the manhole while cleaning the garbage. As there was huge ammonia gas and strong current, they got stuck up there," Shamim, a resident of the area, told the FE.
"Having got no response from them, the locals tried to rescue the cleaners and finally they were rescued by using road ring in an unconscious condition", he said.
They were then sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the attending doctors declared them dead, he added.
The injured person is one Nurul (50).
No case was filed until submission of this report at 6:45 pm, sub-inspector of Mugda Police Station Rafat Ara Sultana told the FE.
