FE REPORT | August 13, 2024 12:00:00

Two deputy governors of Bangladesh Bank Kazi Saidur Rahman and Khurshid Alam, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) head Masud Biswas and policy adviser Abu Farah Mohammad Nasser resigned on Monday.

They sent their resignation letters to the Financial Institutions Division under the Ministry of Finance citing "personal reasons", according to officials concerned.

Meanwhile, the government on Monday reshuffled a search committee to find appropriate candidates for the posts of deputy governor of the central bank.

Former comptroller and auditor-general Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury will lead the committee comprising former chief economist of the central bank Mustafa K Mujeri and its board director Nazrul Huda..

Badre Munir Firdaus, a joint secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, will work as member-secretary of the search committee, according to a notification.

A UNB report adds: The top central bank officials submitted their resignation after allegations surfaced that they had given US $30 million to Salman F Rahman on August 4.

Mohiuddin Rony, a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, gave them an ultimatum on behalf of the students to resign by 1 pm on Monday.

The students alleged that the top officials were involved in illegally providing $30 million from the EDF on August 4, and therefore they must resign as soon as possible. After this ultimatum, the four officials submitted their resignation.

Students' coordinator Mohiuddini alleged that Salman F. Rahman, the owner of Beximco Group, stole $30 million from the EDF fund on August 4.

"If their friends are in charge of the central bank, the money of the state will be looted again. When they have money they will buy weapons to kill Chatra-Janata (Students and common people). This will destabilize the country," he pointed out.
