Two killed in Jamaat ‘hartal’

Two student activists have been shot dead amid the countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal Monday, enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for protesting the execution of death sentence of its leader M Kamaruzzaman, report agencies.
There were also reports of protesters firebombing vehicles around the country as tensions ran high following the execution of M Kamaruzzaman.
Police said the body of a 22-year-old student supporter of the party had been found in the western city of Rajshahi Monday. He had been shot at least five times.
Another student activist died in hospital Monday morning after he was shot during clashes between police and protesters in Sirajganj Sunday night.
Ahmed said the clashes broke out after police arrested four student supporters of Jamaat.
In Rajshahi, the deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam (26), an employee of Rajshahi Islami Bank Medical College Hospital and son of Jalal Uddin of Bharalipara in the city.
Raihanul Pervez, publicity secretary of city unit Chhatra Shibir said police picked up Shahidul from Islami Bank Medical College Hospital around 2.0 am early Sunday and then killed him.
In Sirajganj the deceased was identified as Anisur Rahman Anis (19), son of Jahangir Alam, resident of Goihatta village of Ullapara Upazila of Sirajganj and an activist of the local unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Sirajganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Habibul Islam said police fired at Shibir activists as they hurled crude bombs toward them in Dhanbandi area of Ullapara Upazila around 12:30am, leaving Anis critically injured.
However, no procession or picketing was seen in support of the hartal in the capital till filing of this report at 12pm. The presence of motorised vehicles was normal on the streets.
A large number of policemen and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) remained deployed at important city points to fend off any trouble.
In Chittagong, the pickets set three vehicles afire at Sholoshahar Mayor Goli in Panchlaish area in the city early in the morning.
Pickets also set a bus afire after vandalising it at bus-stand area of Gazipur city around 6:30am.
