The global tally for confirmed cases of the coronavirus crossed 48 million Wednesday, according to Worldometers tally, while the death toll rose above 1.22 million, report agencies.
The US has the highest case tally in the world at 9.4 million and highest death toll at 232,634, or about a fifth of the global totals.
Brazil has the second highest death toll at 160,496 and is third by cases at 5.6 million.
India is the second in cases with 8.3 million and third in deaths at 123,611.
Mexico has the fourth highest death toll at 92,593 and 10th highest case tally at 938,405.
The UK has 47,340 deaths, the highest in Europe and fifth highest in the world, and 1.1 million cases, or ninth highest in the world.
Meanwhile, Large swathes of Europe are now under some form of new lockdown or restriction, as the continent battles a resurgence of COVID-19.
As of Wednesday, at least 5 million out of Europe's 7.4 million inhabitants have been put under some form of new measure, imposed since mid-October.
Another report adds: The chair of Britain's coronavirus vaccine task force says data evaluating the efficacy and safety of the two most advanced candidates should be available in early December.
Kate Bingham told a Parliamentary committee on Wednesday that data on the two vaccine candidates - developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca and Pfizer and BioNTech - should be available by then.
After that, the vaccine candidates will need regulatory approval, Bingham says.
