FE REPORT | January 25, 2024 00:00:00

The UK government is willing to provide support to Bangladesh in curbing inflation and raising the tax-GDP ratio.

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said this after a meeting with British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke at the foreign ministry on Wednesday.

The tax-GDP ratio in Bangladesh is one of the lowest. "We have discussed the issue and the UK is interested in providing us assistance in this regard," the minister told the media.

He also mentioned that the central bank was in talks with the Bank of England about cooperation to curb inflation.

Issues like climate change, Rohingya migration and security cooperation also came up for discussion.

The minister said that he requested the High Commissioner to expedite the visa issuing process for those who wanted to meet their family members in the UK.

Responding to a question, he said that the government would do everything necessary to implement the verdict against convicted BNP leader Tarique Rahman.

Earlier, talking to the reporters, the British High Commissioner said that Britain wanted to strengthen its partnership with Bangladesh coming days.

She said trade and investment got a special focus in the meeting and they also discussed issues related to security cooperation.

She pointed out that as cited in the post-election statement issued by her government on January 8, Britain would continue to engage with Bangladesh on the issue of democracy and human rights.
