UN Secy-General expresses sadness over flood casualties in South Asia

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed deep sadness as monsoon floods have killed hundreds of people and affected tens of millions in South Asia, including Bangladesh, and reaffirmed the UN's readiness to help the victims, reports UNB.
In a message issued by his spokesperson and received here Wednesday, Ban Kimoon said he extends his condolences to the families of those who perished in the floods.
It said, "He (Secretary-General) is also concerned by the economic devastation faced by the survivors."
The UN Secretary-General commended the "prompt and effective response" to the flooding by the affected countries - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
UN agencies have warned of a possible health emergency in South Asia after severe flooding left tens of millions of people in urgent need of fresh water, food and shelter.
