Unitex director, others nabbed, granted bail

CHATTOGRAM, July 17: Three persons, including Unitex Group director (legal and estate) Farhan Ahmed, were arrested in a case filed for grabbing forest land on the Sitakunda coast of Chittagong.

A team of RAB-7 arrested Farhan, the main accused in the case filed by coastal forest department, from his house in Goachi Bagan area of the city at 10:30 pm on July 16.

On the other hand, Sitakunda police arrested two other fugitives-Golam Mawla and Mohammad Nayan-during a raid in Barbakunda area of Sitakunda last night.

Earlier, the police arrested three accused named Zahidul Karim (45), Mehedi Hasan (30) and Md Masud (40) on Thursday night.

Tofail Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda police station, said they had arrest warrants for six accused, including Mr Farhan, in the case.

However, the accused got bail from the Chattogram 5th Judicial Magistrate Court after a hearing in the case.

Judicial magistrate Fardin Mostakim Tasin granted them bail.

Advocate Ravi Shankar Chowdhury represented the Forest Department in the hearing.

On the other hand, Chittagong Bar president advocate Najim Uddin stood for the accused.

The case was filed with Chattogram Forest Court on June 06, accusing six persons, including two top Unitex officials, for encroachment, construction of a dam on forest land and earth digging.

The accused have violated sections 26(1a) and (e) of the Forest Act 1927 (as amended in 2000).
