CHATTOGRAM, June 24: Khankhanabad Union Parishad chairman Jasim Uddin Haider and member Shahidul Islam have been sued on charges of embezzling the government relief allocated to fishermen in Banshkhali upazila of the district.

Mir Md Nazrul Islam, personal assistant to lawmaker Mujibur Rahman, filed the case with a court on Sunday.

The court has acknowledged the case and directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Chattogram to investigate the case.

The complaint states  that the government allocated 56 tonnes of rice for distribution at 56 kg per person to 1,000 fishermen in Khankhanabad Union during the ongoing fishing ban.

However, it is alleged that a portion of this rice was embezzled and sold illegally instead of being stored in the union parishad warehouse.

On the night of June 11, lawmaker Mujibur received a tip-off about the misappropriation of the rice.
