Describing the results of the first phase upazila (UZ) elections as a no-confidence to the current regime, BNP said on Thursday there was a doubt whether 10-12 ruling party-backed candidates could win the polls had it been fair, reports UNB.
"In the first phase of the upazila polls, the people at the grassroots through their right verdict proved that the government has got isolated and unpopular," said BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah.
The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Jatiyatabadi Trinamool Dal.
Hannan Shah said the results of the elections to the local bodies have also demonstrated that people had no support in the January 5 elections.
Citing the unofficial results, the BNP leader said the candidates of BNP and Jamaat have won the elections in 56 upazilas while the ruling party in 33. "There's a doubt whether the ruling party could bag 10-12 seats (upazilas) if they had not used the administration and muscle power."
He predicted that the ruling party-backed contenders will suffer more humiliating defeat in the remaining UZ polls. "People through their ballots reposed their confidence in BNP."
