The Value Added Tax (VAT) wing has asked for Tk 5.10 billion from the Power Development Board (PDB) after it found its outstanding dues following analysis of the latter's annual audit report.
The Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU) under the VAT Department raised the demand for the fiscal years 2012-13 and 2013-14.
The LTU sent a letter to the PDB chairman with the tax demand. It also served a show-cause notice to the PDB.
The unit also forwarded the letter to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) with the details of tax demand from the PDB.
The LTU analysed the submitted documents of the PDB at the unit. It has found the entity does not show deposited deduction of VAT at source or submitted any documents of treasury chalan on payment of at-source VAT.
The LTU collected the annual audit report of the PDB from the website.
It has also found the PDB audit report has shown deduction of 4.0 per cent VAT on each sector including office and other expenses, maintenance and development expenses and fuel expenditures but not deposited to the public exchequer.
On repair and maintenance sector, the PDB also showed deduction of 15 per cent VAT in the annual audit report.
Analysing the audit report, the LTU found the PDB has availed VAT-able services worth Tk 102 billion and the state-run entity owing Tk 5.10 billion VAT at source to the state coffer.
In the letter, the LTU said the PDB has evaded Tk 5.10 billion VAT which is an offence according to the VAT law,1991.
Despite several attempts, the PDB chairman could not be contacted for his comment.
Officials at the LTU said it is a preliminary demand to the PDB.
"There is, however, a scope to discuss the issue with the PDB. The unit is ready to sit in a hearing with the entity for being clear on that issue," said a senior official of the LTU.
The LTU requested the PDB to respond to the show-cause notice containing the tax demand in writing.
