CHATTOGRAM, Sep 29: A lighter vessel carrying scrap iron sank at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port on Saturday.
The vessel named MV Char Shamayl sank at around 12.15 when it was returning to the port after unloading scrap iron from a mother vessel. It sank as another lighter vessel hit it, said Omar Faruk, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority.
He said that the sunken vessel was carrying 400 tonnes of scrap imported by the Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling Mills (BSRM) to its Sadarghat jetty.
Executive director of the Water Transport Cell Mahbub Rashid said one of their vessels sank but could not confirm how the accident happened.
Nine crew members including the Master out of 13 were rescued by a trawler, said lightering vessel contractor association's Haji Shafoq.
The port authority was trying to salvage the ship, the port secretary said.
