CHITTAGONG, June 5: The Korean EPZ authority has alleged that some vested quarters with the support of local leaders of the pro-government party are obstructing its development works.
The Korean EPZ (export processing zone) authority said those quarters are creating disturbances by taking the advantage that there are some religious sites, including graveyards, mandir and madrasa, inside the EPZ area.
Those religious sites and passages are identified by the government authorities concerned. But limits of those sites are not demarcated with pillars in spite of repeated requests from the KEPZ authority.
KEPZ managing director Brigadier General (retired) Hasan Nasir raised these issues at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club Thursday. KEPZ advisor Zia Hussain and DGM Sadin Tayyeb, among others, were present at the press conference.
He said the miscreants have recently demolished the Shahid Minar inside the KEPZ area and put the blame on the KEPZ authority.
In an act of provocation, local miscreants and illegal land-grabbers also started cutting hills 100 yards inside the KEPZ area at around 11.00 am on June 02.
"As the security guards of the KEPZ asked them the cause of cutting hill the illegal encroachers attacked them with lethal weapons," he said.
The authority went to file a case with the Karnaphuli Police Station, but the police, influenced by local political leaders, did not register their case. Instead, the miscreants filed cases accusing seven people of the KEPZ, including its managing director and other senior officials, Hasan Nasir alleged.
