FE Report | September 05, 2019 00:00:00

A student of Viqarunnisa Noon School died of dengue fever at a private hospital in the city on Wednesday.

Thirteen-year-old Asmita Begum, an eighth grader and daughter of Amanat Mawla of Kamlapur village in Bishwanath upazila, died six days after she was admitted to hospital.

Three other members of her family had also contracted the deadly virus earlier, but they could recover.

Meanwhile, as many as 820 people were infected with the viral disease afresh in the last 24 hours as of 8:00am on Wednesday as against 783 patients hospitalised in the previous 24 hours.

Of 820 fresh cases, 345 people were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and 475 others outside the capital.

The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has recorded a total of 192 deaths caused by suspected dengue virus as of Sunday.

After examining 96 death cases, the institute confirmed that 57 people died of dengue, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

But the unofficial figure is much higher, according to the local media.

Presently, some 3588 people are being treated for dengue -- 1989 of them in Dhaka and 1599 outside Dhaka.

A total 73,565 patients had been hospitalised since January 1. Of them, 69785 were discharged from hospital after recovery.

DGHS data showed that the number of dengue patients started decreasing in September while August saw a record number of dengue patient -- 52636 people -- the highest of any months.

In the wake of dengue outbreak, the government agencies concerned have taken special measures, including raising awareness and anti-dengue drive, to keep the disease at bay.

WHO said there is no specific treatment for the viral fever but early detection and proper medication can lower the fatality rate below one per cent. Besides, cleanliness and awareness are the pre-requisites for fighting the disease.
