A middle-aged woman died after being hit and dragged by a rashly driven car on the Dhaka University (DU) campus on Friday afternoon.
Former DU associate professor Azahar Zafar Shah of International Relations Department was driving the private car.
The victim was identified Rubina Akhter (45). She died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 4:30pm, said DMCH police camp in-charge Insp Bachchu Mia.
Her brother-in-law Nurul Amin told the FE that Rubina and he were riding a motorcycle to go to their house at Hazaribagh.
"A car hit my motorcycle in the area between Shahbagh and TSC (Teacher-Student Centre) and we fell down. But my sister-in-law got pinned under the car," he said.
"The car dragged her from there to Nilkhet and it didn't stop even all of us, adjacent people, were screaming."
According to eyewitnesses, the car hit the woman in front of the fine art faculty's gate. But it did not stop, rather dragged her until Nilkhet intersection.
Agitating students and members of the public chased the car and recovered the critically injured woman who was whisked off to DMCH for treatment.
The angry mob attacked the driver and hit him. Later, he was also taken to DMCH.
DU proctor Dr AKM Golam Rabbani also confirmed the name of the ex-teacher who drove the car.
He said Azahar was sacked from the university in 2018 due to his prolonged absence from academic activities.
