Several thousand workers of 16 closed factories of Beximco Group staged a human chain on Nabinagar-Chandra highway at Kaliakoir in Gazipur on Tuesday, demanding immediate reopening of the factories and resumption of the letter of credit (LC) facilities.

They queued up for holding the 10-km human chain with banners and festoons in hands to press home their

demands.

The protesters continued their protest programme for about two hours.

The agitating workers said that the longtime closure of the factories is badly affecting their livelihood.

They also demanded that steps should be taken to provide them with their outstanding arrear immediately.

Earlier, the Ministry of Labour and Employment decided to shut the factories under the Beximco Industrial Park on December 15 last year following a meeting of the advisory council, which was tasked to review the labour and business situation of Beximco's industrial establishments.

The workers and employees also staged a demonstration against the shutdown of the factories, blocking the same highway to meet their demands.

Beximco Group owner Salman F Rahman, also an adviser to deposed Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, is now in jail on various changes.
