Writ filed for vacating Latif\\\'s MP post

A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Thursday seeking a direction for vacating the post of Member of Parliament of former minister and Tangail-4 lawmaker Abdul Latif Siddiqui. A Supreme Court lawyer, Eunus Ali Akond, filed the writ with the concerned section of the HC in the morning. The petition will be placed at an HC bench comprising by Justice Qazi Rezaul Haque and Justice Abu Taher M Saifur Rahman later in the day (Thursday), the petitioner said. The court will hear the petition on Sunday (November 30), he added. The petitioner sought a rule making Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Law Secretary and Parliament Secretary as respondents. Talking to reporters, Eunus Ali Akond said a member of parliament (MP) will lose his membership if he has no connection with any political party. The petition was filed as Latif Siddiqui, who was elected as an Awami League MP from Tangail-4 in the January 5 elections and later expelled from the ruling party a couple of months back over his rant on Holy Hajj, has no membership with any political party, he said. On Tuesday (Nov 25), Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman of CMM court sent the sacked telecom minister to Dhaka Central Jail in a case filed for hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims through his disparaging remarks on Holy Hajj and Tabligh Jamaat, according to a news agency.
