A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking immediate suspension and departmental action against Md Habibur Rahman, chief engineer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), as he is accused in several corruption cases.
Six Supreme Court lawyers, including Barrister Md Solaiman Tushar, filed the petition on Monday.
Habibur Rahman has been made accused in four corruption cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC in January filed four separate cases against Habibur and 18 others in connection with the embezzlement of Tk 8.12 billion from Bangladesh's aviation sector.
However, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh is yet to take any action against Habibur Rahman.
Demanding removal of the Chief Engineer, these Supreme Court lawyers on February 6 this year sent a legal notice to the authorities concerned.
However, the authorities unheeded their notices. Finally, they filed a writ petition with the High Court.
In the petition, they prayed to the court to issue a rule as to why inaction of the respondents to take necessary actions to start departmental proceedings against the CAAB chief engineer for corruption allegations against him should not be declared illegal.
They also prayed to issue rule as to why the respondents should not be directed to take actions to start departmental proceedings against the Chief Engineer of the CAAB and to suspend him from his post immediately for the corruption allegations against him.
The Civil Aviation and Tourism secretary, the CAAB chairman, CAAB chief engineer and others have been made respondents in the petition.
Lawyer Solaiman Tushar said, "The CAAB chief engineer should be removed immediately. If he holds his post, the ongoing investigation might be influenced."
