Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has ordered the institution of a committee to investigate the roles of former top Election Commission officials in organising three previous 'controversial' parliamentary polls, reports UNB.
The directive came during a meeting of the National Consensus Commission held at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday, according to a statement from the Chief Advisor's Office.
The investigation will focus on former chief election commissioners, election commissioners, and secretaries at the Election Commission Secretariat who were involved in organising votes overseen by the previous Awami League government, the statement said.
"Political parties are unanimous in their view that those responsible for conducting the past three disputed elections must be held accountable," Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Electoral Reform Commission, told the meeting.
The session was attended by Consensus Commission Vice-President Ali Riaz and members Badiul Alam Majumdar, Iftekharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain, and Mohammad Ayub Mia.
Commission members also briefed Yunus on the progress of drafting the July Charter.
"There has been agreement on several points," said Riaz. "We are confident the charter can be finalised soon through consultations with all political parties."
