Falguni look in Bashonti colour

The first day of Spring, also known as 'Pohela Falgun,' is celebrated every year in our country on the 14th (previously 13th) of February according to the Gregorian calendar. During this occasion, a tradition has been set to wear 'Bashonti' (golden-ish yellow) coloured clothes to become one with nature. The flowers of Spring, Krishnochura, Polash, Shimul, and Champa all resemble life and hope, while the colour yellow is also associated with happiness, optimism and positivity.
If you are wondering what to wear on this day, here are some tips and ideas to look both comfortable and fashionable on this festival:
For Women
When dressing up, women have many options to wear at festivals. However, the most popular attire for traditional festivals is a saree. Some of the best colours to wear on Pohela Falgun are yellow, orange, red or pink, as they symbolise the warmth, vibrancy and brightness of Spring.
You can also gear up your outfit by making a fusion with two different colours: a yellow saree with a pink blouse or an orange saree with a blue blouse. Floral prints or plain-based sarees suit the best for this occasion. Whether you wear yellow, orange or pink, try wearing cotton because the weather might get hot.
Flower garlands for the neck, wrist, hair bun and floral earrings will add charm to your looks, but remember to pick fresh flowers. Gerbera and marigolds will complement the soft look and make you look vividly bright.
If you are wearing flower jewellery, try to avoid artificial ones. But if you want bangles, put on a dozen 'reshmichuri' that match your costume.
If you want to spend a hassle-free day and not wear a saree, you still have the option of a salwar kameez or kurta. For simpler looks, match up your orange kurta with a white pair of leggings and accessorise yourself with a wristwatch and a thin bracelet. And if you are choosing a salwar kameez, do not forget to take a pair of humans to bring out the festive look. A proper handbag also goes beautifully fashionable with simple wear.
Another trendy option for women can be a colourful long skirt with a plain white top. As much as this wear can look stylish, it is still very cosy and lightweight.
For Men
Fotua and cotton Punjabi are two comfortable yet fashionable outfit options for men on Pohela Falgun. Colours within the spectrum of yellow, green or brown suit men more than any other colour for this occasion. Stripes, checks or embroidery may also be brought to contrast the outfit.
A beige coatee over a white Punjabi or a white coatee over a yellow- or orange-skinned Punjabi may make you stand out. Some also like to wear 'dhuti' at Bengali festivals, but you should only try it if you are confident enough to carry it. For pants, white goes quite well with all the light colours.
Recently, floral printed or sewn Punjabis have become popular, especially for Boshonto Utshob. You can also experiment with different shades, tones and combinations of colours to create a lively and attractive look.
Since men do not need to accessorise much, choosing the right pair of shoes and a proper wristwatch is very important. Shoes or sandals can be both complementing and contrasting. Although sandals go better with Bengali attire, only wear them if comfortable. A thin, off-white shawl can also make your outfit look sophisticated.
Pohela Falgun, the arrival celebration of Spring, is special to Bengali folks. While clothing can significantly impact one's looks, it is essential to be confident and comfortable, as genuine beauty comes from the combination of self-assurance and ease. Therefore, embrace the day with charm, joy and vibrancy in whatever you wear.
