Bangladesh has taken a step to enrich Bengali language on the internet, inserting thousands of locally used popular words in the Google Translator.
Under the initiatives, around 0.4 million Bengali words will be included in the global platform initially, making Bengali language seventh in its position in the popular internet search engine.
State minister for ICT division under the ministry of post, telecommunications, information and technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak came up with the disclosure at a press briefing at his office in the city Friday.
The ICT minister told the media that Google Developers Group-Bangla (GDG-Bangla) in association with the ICT Division is jointly working in this regard.
"On the day of the country's independence, March 26, we will input the words in the global platform. Anybody can take help from it," the minister said.
The junior minister noted that some 50 events will be arranged across the country including at the Dhaka University campus and the Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) to engage young blood voluntarily in the historical initiative.
"We are expecting around 4,000 people will work on the day actively, while some others will also help from abroad including US and UK to enrich our mother tongue," the minister hoped.
He called upon the country's people to make the initiative a success. "We want to see one of the world's lwidely spoken languages take its position over the internet too," he noted.
