101km railway line in Ctg to be built

CHITTAGONG, Mar 9: A 101 km railway line from Dohazari in Chittagong upto Gumdhum of Cox's Bazar near Myanmar border will be built. Necessary initiative has been taken to revive the project. With the implementation of the gigantic project Chittagong is expected to emerge as an important centre of railway transhipment, experts said.

Concerned sources said, the task of building the railway line between port city of Chittagong and tourism city of Cox's Bazar, has been discussed since long and necessary surveys were conducted on different occasions. But implementation of the project was thwarted served times.

Meanwhile, the government attached priority to the project and took necessary initiatives of reviving the project of extending the railway line from Dohazari to Gumdhum under Trans Asia Railway Project. Asian Development Bank (ADB) is also reportedly gave approval to the project, sources informed.

Bangladesh Railway (BR) invited tenders for feasibility study of Chittagong-Cox's bazar railway line afresh and later, an agreement was signed with the Canadian Company Cana Rail authority in 2001. Cana Rail began the feasibility study in 2001 and submitted the report to the then government. It was mentioned in the report that the proposed line would be profitable creating the facilities of transporting over 2.5 million passengers and around 0.9 million tonnes of goods annually.

According to BR East Zone sources, the task of extending railway line up to Cox's bazar has become essential at this stage as it would invigorate the national economy with the expansion of cement, garments and other industries as well as deep sea port in this region.
