The government would provide 10 million (1.0 crore) land phone connections across the country by 2012, Post and Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said Saturday.
"The government would take WiMAX facilities to the district level within two years," he said while speaking as chief guest at the launching ceremony of two digital mobile phone sets - D-707 and D-706 - of Telelink Group.
The minister said, "We have a plan to launch third generation (3G) telephony service from next July."
He said, "The total number of land phone subscribers was 850,000 before launching '30 paisa, one country, one rate' package."
"Within just three months the subscribers' number reached 950,000. We are providing assembled land phone sets worth Tk 700 each and we are struggling to meet the people's demand," the minister added.
Telelink Group Managing Director Engr Md Nizam Uddin Jitu demanded government assistance to set up mobile phone industry in the country which will also discourage import of mobile phone sets.
He said holders of D-707 and D-706 sets will get 15 months warranty which is rare in the country. The D-707 set has 2.4-inch display touch screen and 1.3 mega pixel camera while the D-706 set has 2-inch display and 2 mega pixel camera.
Both the sets have FM radio, MP3 and MP4 player, GPRS class-12 and 500-number saving facilities.
