At least four per cent government and six per cent private registered primary schools do not have any toilet while only 14 per cent schools have one toilet, speakers told a workshop.
In most cases there is no proper water supply system in school toilets. Even the toilet facility is poor in many hospitals and clinics and without water supply system.
These were revealed Wednesday at a workshop on 'Right to water and Sanitation' at RDF auditorium in Barguna. Development Organisation of the Rural Poor (DORP) organised the workshop.
The workshop was told that sanitation and treatment cost for related diseases takes a toll of about Tk 2.96 billion every year on Bangladesh. Besides, water supply system and sanitation are hampered due to waterlogging and salinity.
They noted that various water and sanitation related laws, policy, programmes and international commitments are not properly executed in Bangladesh.
Speakers said although the United Nations General Assembly declared water and sanitation as human rights, still it is not acknowledged in the Constitution. Besides, water supply and sanitation system is not adequate in terms of and production and target for the marginal people. For this the government has to ensure water and sanitation for all, they added.
