14 Indian fishermen sent to jail for intrusion

BAGERHAT, Oct 17 (UNB): A court here Friday sent 14 Indian fishermen, who were arrested from the Fairway buoy area of the Bay of Bengal Thursday, to jail.
The court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate passed the order when police produced them before the court.
Earlier Thursday, The members of Bangladesh Navy, in a drive, detained the 14 Indian fishermen along with a trawler from the Fairway buoy area for trespassing on the Bangladesh water territory.
The Navy members later handed the detainees over to Mongla thana where a case was filed against them.
The arrestees hail from different areas of 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, India.
Talking to reporters under the custody at Mongla thana, the detained fishermen claimed they mistakenly entered the Bangladesh territory in the Bay of Bengal.
However, Bangladesh Navy members as well as Bangladeshi fishermen frequenting buoy area noted that a good number of Indian fishermen frequently intrude into the Bangladesh territory for netting hilsa.
