15-man body formed to save Ctg people as hillslide season nears

CHITTAGONG, May 8: The local administration has constituted a 15-member rehabilitation committee to save people from probable hillslide in the city.
A meeting was held at the conference hall of the Divisional Commissioner M Abdullah on Thursday attended by relevant government officials and the representatives from different organisations. Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mesbah Uddin, Director of the department of environment Jafar Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (revenue) SM Abdul Quader, representatives of the police, City Corporation, Railway, Chittagong Development Authority, Army and fire services were present in the meeting.
The Divisional Commissioner said he wants to bring the hill-slide death toll to zero this year as precautionary measures including evacuation of the people city's hill pockets well in advance before the upcoming monsoon, miking in the hill areas, leaflet distribution among all people in the city and media campaign would be taken.
A committee with ADC (revenue) SM Abdul Quader as convenor had been constituted in the meeting taking representatives from all the agencies concerned, he said adding that the committee would identify the pockets of hills in the city where people were illegally residing and make recommendations as to where the evicted persons would be rehabilitated.
