Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Shafir told the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday that the number of landless families is 15,08,876 in the country.
There is a total 1.509 million landless families across the country, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics data released in 2008, he said replying to a question from treasury bench member Didarul Alam in the House.
Presently the government is also collecting the district-wise number of landless families through deputy commissioners, the minister added.
Replying to another question from Mahfuzur Rahman, Sharif informed the House that the data collection on landless families in Chittagong district is about to end. The ministry asked all officials concerned across the country to send elaborate information on landless and homeless families.
In this connection, the ministry sent a letter to Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Swandip for providing list of landless families in the island, he said.
On another question from Begum Pinu Khan, the minister informed the House that about 9,508.744 acres of land is lying as khas in Dohar and Nababganj upazilas in Dhaka district, of which 4,144.50 acres are agricultural and 5,364.244 acres non-agriculture.
He said the government is conducting regular programme to recover khas land from illegal occupation.
