About 10 per cent or 15 million of the total population of the country are the carriers of Thalassaemia disease, according to a survey.
About 10,000 to 12,000 babies are born with Thalassaemia and most of the patients die without any treatment as the treatment is very costly.
The disclosures were made at a lottery draw programme of Bangladesh Thalassaemia Samity in the city on Wednesday.
Daily Samakal editor Golam Sarwar was present as chief guest at the function while the ex-president of the Samity Engr Mosharraf Hossain chaired it.
Golam Sarwar said Thalassaemia is such a disease that does not have any treatment but the patient survives only through blood diffusion throughout entire life.
If any Thalassaemia disease carrier marries another carrier, then their babies are supposed to have the disease. The major way to prevent the disease is to avoid marriage between two carriers, said Mr Sarwar. He suggested blood test for boys and girls before getting married.
