SYLHET, Nov 8 (UNB): Seventeen policemen were reportedly injured in a drive against a group of people when the latter were reportedly preparing to illegally take possession of a water body in Thubri Shilchand area of Goainghat upazila early morning on Saturday.
The injured include Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of Goainghat police station.
However, the number of the injured among the local people could not be known as they reportedly fled the scene after the clash that took place around 3am.
Police said Monaf and Raj Mohan had been at loggerheads over the lease of the water body in Thubri Shilchand area for a long time.
Being informed that Monaf and his followers were getting prepared to take possession of the water body by force, police conducted a drive at Monaf's house adjacent to the water body at Birkuli village around 3.00am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Monaf's men swopped on the policemen, leaving 17 of them injured.
At one stage, police fired 74 rounds of bullet to bring the situation under control.
The injured policemen were taken to the Upazila Health Complex.
Later, police detained five people, including two women, in connection with the incident.
The arrestees were identified as Monir Uddin, 40, son of Ataur Rahman, Kamal Uddin, 16, son of Abdus Salam, Nazma Begum, 28, wife of Abdul Haque and Saleha Khatun, 26, wife of Monir Uddin, hailing from Birkuli village.
