The 17th anniversary of the landmark 1997 Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Agreement will be observed today (Tuesday) across the country, reports BSS.
In this connection, government and several socio-cultural organisations have chalked out programmes to celebrate it ending two decades of insurgency in the southeastern hills.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina issued separate statements greeting the countrymen and particularly the residents of the CHT region on the occasion while colourful street marches and discussions in the three hill districts of Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban and in the capital Dhaka are set to mark the anniversary.
As part of the celebrations, PM's International Affairs Adviser Professor Dr Gowher Rizvi opened in Dhaka today a three-day painting exhibition with life and nature of the CHT being its theme.
State Minister for CHT Affairs Bir Bahadur U Shoi Shing and famous expatriate artist Monirul Islam joined the opening ceremony as the special guests at Dhaka Art Centre at Dhanmondi.
