BANDARBAN, Sept 20 (UNB): Police arrested 18 people from an abandoned house at Kumari village in Lama upazila as they were ready to go to Malaysia illegally early Saturday.

An alleged human trafficker was also arrested from the spot.

The trafficking victims hail from different parts of Sylhet, Noakhali, Feni, Comilla and Barisal districts.

Police said acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided an abandoned house at one Anisur Rahman's rubber garden in the area about 12:30 am and arrested the 18 people.

They also took into custody Abul Hossain, caretaker of the garden, on charge of his alleged bid to smuggle out the 18 people to Malaysia.

Quoting the victims, police said a gang of human traffickers had brought them there a few days ago promising to send them to Malaysia.

Locals suspected that Abul Hossain had been involved in human trafficking for long.

A case was filed with Lama thana in this connection.
