18 killed in separate incidents

Eighteen persons were killed and many others injured in separate incidents in different places of the country during the last two days, report agencies.

In Gazipur, five people were killed and 10 others injured when a minibus plunged into a roadside ditch at Tongi Nimtali rail gate area on the Tongi-Kaliganj Road Saturday morning.

Witnesses said the Tongi-bound minibus from Pubail suddenly turned turtle and fell into the ditch at about 8:00 am, killing four passengers and the bus helper on the spot and injuring 10 other passengers.

Four of the deceased were identified as Akbar, Saddam, Hasan and bus helper Zahir.

In Madaripur, a fish trader died when he fell from the roof of a running bus on the Shashikor-Bhurughata Road at Kalkini Upazila of the district Friday.

In Brahmanbaria, two people, including an expatriate man, were killed by lightning at Bhaddshora village in Sadar Upazila of the district Friday night.

Sources said the two were injured fatally when lightning struck them while they were chatting on the roadside near their house. At the hospital, doctors declared them dead.

In Sirajganj, five people were killed and seven injured by lightning in Shahjadpur and Belkuchi Upazilas Friday night and Saturday morning.

Seven people were also injured by lightning in the Upazila. They were admitted to local hospitals.

Meanwhile, Yusuf Ali of Belua village in Belkuchi Upazila was killed as thunderbolt struck him Friday night.

In Comilla, three bodies, including a woman and a baby, were recovered in the district  Friday.

In another incident, police recovered the bodies of Kulsum wife of Nurul Islam of Moshkipur village in Borura Upazila and one-and-half year old boy Ibrahim, son of Rafiq Miah of Dhanishur village from a pond Friday afternoon.

In  Munshiganj, the police recovered the decomposed body of an unidentified woman from Chhanbari Chowrasta area of Srinagar Upazila on the Dhaka-Maowa Highway  Friday morning.

In  Cox's Bazar, the slaughtered body of a Saudi expatriate was recovered from a beel (water body) at Jhilangja Sikdarpara in Sadar Upazila Friday morning.

In Barisal, a farmer was slaughtered by unknown assailants at Chandpura village in Baufal Upazila of Patuakhali district Thursday night.

In Mymensingh, a  farmer was killed and 10 others injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups at Putijana village in Phulbaria Upazila Friday morning.

The police arrested one Abul Hossain in connection with the incident.
