HAZARDOUS GOODS

19 long-lying containers destroyed at Ctg Port

FE REPORT | October 29, 2025 00:00:00

Nineteen containers of hazardous goods, lying long at the Chattogram Port, were destroyed in an environmentally safe manner, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The destruction work began at 9:00 AM on Saturday and continued uninterrupted until 9:30 PM on Sunday. Mohammad Nurullah Nuri, Additional Divisional Commissioner (Overall) of Chattogram Division as well as convener of the inter-agency committee to dispose of unauctionable and perishable goods, supervised the process.

Representatives from the Department of Environment, Department of Explosives, DGFI, NSI, Chattogram Port Authority, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, and Chattogram Customs House were also present.

Members of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Ansar, and local port police provided security and logistical support throughout the process.

According to the NBR, the destroyed items included uncoated calcium carbonate (16 containers), orange emulsion (one container), sweet whey powder (one container), and skimmed milk powder (one container). These goods had deteriorated over time, and posed safety and environmental risks to the port area.

The NBR has also issued a special directive to auction about 6,069 containers (approximately 10,000 TEUs), remained unclaimed for long. The inventory process for these containers has been completed, and a significant portion has already been auctioned. The NBR expressed optimism that the ongoing auction efforts would significantly reduce container congestion at the port.
