190 out of 500 bhoris of looted gold recovered; DB arrests four

The Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested four individuals for their alleged involvement in stealing gold ornaments from a shop at Fortune Shopping Mall in the capital's Malibagh.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Additional Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam disclosed the development to the media at a press briefing on Friday.

He said that the arrestees are Shahin Matabbar alias Shahin alias Shahid (46); Anita Roy (31); Md Nurul Islam (33); and Uttam Chandra Sur, (49).

The additional police commissioner said that around 190 bhori gold ornaments, 93.5 grams of silver, a motorcycle and Tk 1,77,200 were recoverd from their possession.

He said that the looters entered the market by climbing a rope, hanging it from the window of one of the toilets. They entered the market and looted the jewellery store before, fleeing the scene at around 4:30 am on October 9.

He said that they were in burqas during the theft.

Md Shafiqul Islam said that DB teams arrested Shahin Matabbar from Chattogram on Thursday and recovered around 121.07-bhori looted gold ornaments from his cattle shed.

He said that another team of the DB arrested Anita Roy, wife of the accused Shaishab Roy, from Uzirpur, Barishal, on the same day and recovered 52.81-bhori gold ornaments from her possession.

Police also arrested Md Nurul Islam from Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, and recovered the motorcycle, Tk 1,77,200 in cash that was obtained by selling the looted gold and around two bhoris of gold ornaments.

Uttam Chandra Sur, who allegedly financed the heist, was arrested from his Shakharibazar residence Friday morning, and 13.67 bhoris of gold ornaments were recovered from his possession.

Around 500 bhoris of gold ornaments were stolen from Shampa Jewellers inside Fortune Shopping Mall in Malibagh as claimed by shop owner Achinta Kumar Biswas.
