232 rape incidents occur in Sept: BMP

Number of rape incidents in the country is on the increase as 232 cases were recorded in September against 169 in August, according to the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP).

BMP revealed the figures based on news reports run by 14 national dailies.

Total 521 incidents of violence against women took place in September and of them 55 per cent were rapes, showed the BMP data.

Of the total rape incidents, 19 were gang-rapes and 15 were murders after rape.

Apart, 15 more cases were recorded over attempts to rape and 30 cases over sexual harassment.

21 incidents of physical torture against women took place in September.

Forty-one women were murdered and 29 died mysteriously in the last month while 42 child marriage cases were recorded.

Some 41 incidents of child marriage were prevented.
