CHITTAGONG, Dec 22: The 49th batch of Bangladesh Marine Academy consisting of 240 cadets including 13 female cadets is passing out tomorrow (Tuesday) to enter the jobless market in the marine field.
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan is expected to be present as the chief guest on the occasion to be held at the Marine Academy compound in Chittagong.
Cadets said this large number of marine cadets will enter the jobless market in the marine field. From the same academy 283 cadets passed, out of whom 186 cadets are yet to see the ladder of the ship.
This new addition will raise the number to 426. It is also learnt from Department of Shipping sources that another 550 cadets will pass out from different private academies in next two to three months.
Sources said the Marine Academy authority is responsible for this situation in spite of their knowledge about the statistics of supply and demand. Worldwide shipping movement is very poor and the number of ocean-going ships in Bangladesh flag has come down to 38 from 72 in just two years, of which only 29 are plying. Despite knowing all the facts the Marine Academy administration has taken no remedial measure.
Marine Academy cadets earned specialised training unlike general education and need job security before their entry into an institute. Presently, there are 18 private maritime institutes, of which at least 12 are running in four/five-room apartment-size buildings.
Sources said in a private institute each cadet pays Tk 1.4 to 1.8 million for the two-year course with uncertain future.
In Bangladesh Marine Academy a cadet spends Tk 0.4 million for a two-year course and additional Tk 20 thousand for ancillary courses and Tk 24 thousand for image promotion fund.
