A court in the city Wednesday sent five people, including three policemen, to jail in a case filed in connection with recovery of gold bars, reports UNB.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Samsul Arefin passed the order when police produced them before the court.
They are three policemen--SI Manzurul Alam, contestable Wahid and constable Akash of Rampura Thana, Sajib Shikdar, a police informer and Mahfuz Alam, a driver.
Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) of police in separate drives arrested four people, including three policemen, and recovered 149 gold bars from their possessions in the capital, Naryanganj, Gazipur and Bogra areas Monday night.
The detectives detained driver Mahfuz for interrogation.
DB officials said a patrol team of Rampura Thana Police challenged a microbus in Banasree area on March 13. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, two of its passengers, Samir and Muhin, fled the scene. Three days later, a case was filed with the thana showing recovery of 70 gold bars and making absconding Samir and Muhin accused of it.
When they were interrogated after their arrest, Samir and Muhin disclosed that there were more gold bars in the microbus.
DB police launched an investigation into the case at the order of DMP commissioner Benazir Ahmed.
After investigation, the DB police arrested SI Manzurul Alam, contestable Wahid and constable Akash from Rampura thana and police informer Rana Monday.
After further interrogation, three separate DB teams conducted simultaneous drives Monday night and recovered the 149 gold bars.
Earlier, officer-in-charge of Rampura thana Kripa Krishno Bala and Inspector (Investigation) Nasim Ahmed were closed from the thana on March 18 after the concealment of gold bar recovery came to light.
