The scientific seminar -- 'Update on Asthma Management' -- in progress at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) recently.

About 3.2 million children above the age of 10 in the country suffer from asthma, most of whom live in urban areas, experts have said at a seminar in the city recently.

Two decades ago, most asthma patients in the country were from rural areas, whereas now the number of asthma patients is increasing alarmingly in urban areas. The increasing number of patients in cities is mainly attributed to air pollution and unhealthy environment, the experts have said.

The scientific seminar on 'Update on Asthma Management' was held at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), says a press release.

In his speech, BSMMU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mohammed Atiqur Rahman said currently, over 260 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, which accounts for 8-10 per cent of the global population. The number of asthma patients is steadily increasing due to air pollution, unhealthy environment, and increased use of chemical substances. As a result, the number of patients in cities is higher now.

BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Deen Mohd. Noorul Huq emphasised the importance of working more towards disease prevention, control, and proper awareness alongside asthma treatment. Asthma cannot be eradicated, it has to be controlled. Environmental pollution is the major contributing factor behind the increase in its prevalence.

Prime Minister's personal physician, Professor Emeritus Dr. A B M Abdullah, focused on the importance of comprehensive knowledge about appropriate treatment of this disease among all doctors, especially those who are providing primary care to patients.
