Around three per cent students, or about 800, are expelled from different faculties, institutes and affiliated colleges of Dhaka University every year for adopting unfair means in examinations, ultimately putting an end to their studentships.
DU Administrative sources said a total of 7,755 students from various departments, institutes and allied-colleges of the university were expelled during the last ten years for different periods.
During the last four academic years, 398 students have been expelled from the university-96 in the session 2005-06, 74 in 2004-05, 112 in 2003-04 and 116 in 2002-03 with a declining trend of expulsion compared to the previous years.
Students of DU-affiliated medical and law colleges are also reported in the list of expulsion.
Recently, disciplinary actions were taken in a meeting of the 'discipline committee' May 17 against some 47 students for committing malpractice in the examinations and misbehaving with the teachers.
The committee issued letters to the university proctor, the exam controller, the accounting director and the deputy registrar (Education-2) June 12 apprising them of punitive actions against the aforesaid students.
Out of the 47 expelled students, 16 are from medical colleges, four from Home Economics College and the remaining are from different departments of DU.
Of them, 41 students have been expelled for exam plus one year period, two for exam plus two-year, one for exam plus three-year and one forever.
Sources said that most of the expelled are directly involved with some political party or another.
They adopt undue practices in the exams, as they don't study throughout the year because of doing politics, MBA student Faisal Kabir said.
Many of the students expelled for two or three years don't take classes and sit for the examinations even after ending their expulsion period. As a result a host of students drop out from DU every year.
When contacted, noted educationist Serajul Islam Chowdhury said that tendency of copying in the exams comes from reluctance in study.
