Four more Regional Passport Offices (RPO) will start operations this year as a part of the government's decision to extend passport-related services across the country.

With the setting up of these four offices, the number of total RPOs will be 19. Besides, 52-district commissioner's offices in district headquarters are also issuing passports.

The government had allocated Tk 321 million to establish the four RPOs in the districts of Comilla, Noakhali, Jessore and Chittagong, said Abdur Rob Howlader, director general of the DIP told the FE Thursday.

"We have proposed to the Ministry of Home for allocating Tk 600 million more to set up six more RPOs in the district of Sylhet, Mymansingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal to cover entry country," he added.

He said each passport issuing office was now issuing around 10,000 to 11,000 passports everyday and with the expansion of the services, the passport authorities would be able to enhance its passport delivery capacity roughly by 20 per cent.

In 2007, the DIP issued nearly 1.8 million passports, posting a record growth of 25 per cent over the previous calendar year and it has already issued 1.2 million by the end of June this year, according to the DIP.

In 2007, DIP had earned Tk 5.76 billion in revenue by issuing passports in the calendar year. It has already earned Tk 3.26 billion by the end of June this year and it targets to earn Tk 8.00 billion by the end of current year.
