BAGERHAT, July 20 (UNB) : At least 25 fishermen went missing as four trawlers with 48 fishermen aboard capsized after they were caught in a violent storm in the Bay Monday noon.
The missing fishermen hailed from Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali and Bhola districts.
Survivors said the trawlers sank as they were hit by high waves triggered by the storm while fishing at different points of the Bay.
Of the 48 fishermen, 23 were rescued with the help of other trawlers while a few others managed to swim ashore.
Coastguard Commander (Mongla West Zone) Captain Bashir said they were trying to trace the missing people.
Meanwhile, the sea has been very rough due to squally wind under the influence of well-marked low formed over the north-west Bay and adjoining area, and its water level marked a rise by 02-to 04 feet above the normal astronomical tide.
Hundreds of fishermen along with their trawlers have taken shelter in different costal areas of the Sundarbans and Bagerhat.
Met Office has advised the maritime port of Mongla to hoist local cautionary signal number three.
However, the activities in the port remained normal.
