Customs officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) seized smuggled gold bars weighing 43 kilogrammes (kg) on Wednesday, its intelligence officials said.
The gold bars worth Tk 215 million were found in three cartons at cargo village of the airport at around 4:00am, said deputy director of Customs Intelligence Mostafizur Rahman.
He said they launched the drive from the early hours at the cargo village, following intelligence report on gold smuggling. At one stage they found 43 gold bars, weighing 1 kg each, inside some cartons of garment accessories.
A flight of Singapore Airlines carried the cartons for a ready-made garment factory at Chittagong EPZ on Tuesday night. He, however, did not disclose the factory's name.
No one was arrested in connection with the seizure.
Another customs official said the latest gold recovery indicated that the smugglers have become active again. No such consignment was seized since three senior Biman officials, among five, were arrested last month.
