5 to walk gallows for Zubair killing case

A Dhaka court condemned Sunday five persons to death and five others to life term imprisonment for killing Jahangirnagar University (JU) student Zubair Ahmed, reports UNB.

The condemned convicts are Khandaker Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, Rashedul Islam Raju, Khan Muhammad Raif, Jahid Hasan and Mahbub Hasan, were also fined Tk 20,000 each.

The lifers are Ishtiaque Mehbub Arup, Nazmus Sakib Tapu, Mazharul Islam, Kamruzzaman Shohag, Shafiul Alam Setu and Abhinandan Kundu Abhi.

All the condemned convicts and lifer Istiaq Mehbub Arup were tried in absentia.

The court, however, acquitted two other accused-Nazmul Hossain Plabon and Mahmudul Hasan Masud-as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.

Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of the Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict at around 12:50 pm when seven of the convicts-Nazmul Hossain Plaban, Kamruzzaman Shohagh, Mazharul Islam, Muhammad Mahmudul Hasan Masud, Nazmus Sakim Tapu, Shafiul Alam Setu and Abhinandan Kundu- were present in the courtroom.

Zubair Ahmed, an English Department student of JU, was severely beaten by some BCL activists on January 8, 2012 and he succumbed to his injuries at the United Hospital in the city the following day.

A case was later filed with the Ashulia thana in this connection. Police submitted a charge sheet against 13 students of the university on April 8, 2012.
