About 50 per cent of the total workplace deaths in the country take place in the construction sector, which is having a boom-time through a rather random growth, reports UNB.
This finding was disclosed Wednesday in Bangladesh Worker Safety Programme (BWSP) survey report titled 'Workplace Deaths in the Industrial and Service Sectors of Bangladesh 2007'.
BWSP, Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) and Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) jointly conducted the survey through monitoring 17 national newspapers and separate investigations on the incidents.
This is the first of its kind in the country as it sets out the circumstances of all 222 deaths -- who, when and how the workers died. It shows that a total of 164 separate incidents resulted in 222 deaths in the country. Of the worker deaths, 103 were in the construction sector. Besides, there were 63 deaths in manufacturing sector while 42 in the service sector.
Almost half the reported deaths (84) took place in Dhaka district though there were sizeable numbers reported in Chittagong (34), Narayanganj (18) and Gazipur (11) districts.
