$510m WB financing for secondary edn

The World Bank (WB) will provide Bangladesh with US$510 million financing to help enhance the quality and effectiveness of secondary education system in Bangladesh.
An agreement to this effect was signed between the government and the WB at the National Economic Council (NEC) auditorium at the city's Sher-e-Banganagar, a WB press release said.
Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Kazi Shofiqul Azam and acting WB Country Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal Rajashree Paralkar signed the credit agreement on behalf of their sides.
According to the press release, the WB financing will be available for the Transforming Secondary Education for Results (TSER) programme which aims to benefit 13 million students studying in Grades 6-12.
The TSER will support the government's 'Secondary Education Development Programme (SEDP), involving $17.30.
The programme will focus on improving education quality and access, and that students - especially girls and children from low-income households - complete secondary education.
"Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in advancing access to education, and has achieved gender parity in secondary education," the release said, quoting Mr. Paralkar
The WB acting country director was also quoted as saying: "Continuing to invest in quality education is critical for Bangladesh to achieve its vision of becoming a middle-income country.
